Child Support

The state of Colorado has very specific child support guidelines for divorced, separated or unmarried parents. The purpose of these guidelines is to ensure an appropriate share of each parent's income and resources are given to the child.

A child support amount is determined by a formula that takes many factors into account, including the gross monthly income of both parents and the expenses of the child. These expenses may include daycare, medical insurance or other special needs. Custodial and visitation arrangements may also affect child support payments. In addition, child support orders may be modified if there was a substantial and material change in circumstances. Typical changes that could lead to a decrease in the amount of child support obligations include unfavorable income and employment changes, the needs of a subsequent family, or disability. Alternatively, changes that could lead to an increase in the amount of child support obligations include increase in the cost of living for the child, special medical needs, increased need by reason of age, and the obligated parents' increased income. However, any modifications must be approved by the court.

Both parents have a legal obligation to provide financial support for their children. Whether you are seeking to establish an initial order for child support, or are seeking to enforce or modify a prior support order, we can help. We'll work with you to determine the fair amount of support for each parent and will assist you in making sure that support and financial assistance is paid.
