P.E. Hamm House In Longmont, Colorado

Address: 709 3rd Avenue, Longmont, CO
Landmark Designation: 1980
Construction Date: ca. 1906
Architectural Style: Four Square

Home to the Jorgensen, Brownell & Pepin, P.C. Longmont office, this substantial two-story brick home was built by Charles H. Wessel in 1906. He was living in the George W. Allen Home at 703 3rd Avenue and decided to build in the adjoining orchard to the west. This home represents a period of construction in the town when prosperity was beginning to appear in the farming community.

Percy Edward Hamm was born in Denver, Colorado, the son of Civil War Veteran John Henry Hamm and wife, Sarah who were both Colorado pioneers in 1872. P.E. Hamm moved to Leadville in 1878 where he established the Winnemuck Mine. Mr. Hamm bought the Sullivan Rowen Hardware business in Longmont after the 1907 Silver Panic, and proceeded to operate the Hamm-Weller Hardware business for many years. In 1910, P.E. Hamm purchased the home for his wife, Katherine, and their three children.

P.E. Hamm was active in the community, serving as bank president and director for 25 years; he also engaged in farming and was involved with many other business interests in the area. His family contributed to the heritage of the state and community through generations of involvement.
